What Can You Learn About Leading From Living in a Foxhole?
This presentation, as a keynote, as a breakout session, or as an all-day workshop draws heavily on Joe’s combat and command experiences during 23 years of US Army service. Joe weaves in real stories of his own experiences in Vietnam with stories of such well known World War II military leaders as Eisenhower, MacArthur, Patton, and Marshall. Joe takes a look at the leadership lessons he learned as a young soldier and how those lessons applied to his careers as a military commander and, later, as a Chief Operating Officer in the business world. Through fun, interesting, and compelling stories, Joe answers questions such as:
- Can you learn anything about leadership from burning poop?
- What leadership lessons can you learn from war atrocities and how do they apply to you today?
- Was Hitler a great leader? What critical mistakes did he make that can bring down your team today?
- At what point do you admit you’re in deep trouble and “call in artillery on yourself?”
- What does charisma have to do with leading?
- What is a servant-leader and why does it matter?
Congratulations, You’re Fired!!
You’ve been the head of your department, division, or plant for several years and you’re doing a great job. You know it because the boss or the board of directors has said some very nice things about you in public and, besides, you just got a nice big, fat bonus. Congratulations! However, you’re fired!!!
Can it happen? You bet! Has it happened? All the time! Will it happen to you? Maybe…who knows? But one thing is absolutely certain. If it happens to you and you’re not prepared, be ready for some serious strain, lots of worry, and inevitable family tension and anxiety.
This breakout or half-day workshop looks at the subtle clues that most people miss, the issues that are happening behind the scenes that few understand, and the personal monsters that we must all tame. In addition:
- Do you have an exit strategy? What is an exit strategy anyway and why is it important?
- What is a personal SWOT analysis and how do I do it? Is it really necessary?
- How do you actually get terminated? Why is it important to know how? After all, I’m fired!
- How do I get another job? Is there help out there?
- What is a résumé and why is it important? How do I get the attention of my next boss?
- What one thing can you do to almost guarantee that you will “ace the interview?”
- Once the interview is over, what do I do now?
