JAZMIN AVALOS

Jazmin Avalos, Miss California 2021, is a first-generation, Cum Laude graduate from the California State University, Fullerton where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Minor in Chicano studies. She is a California native and was born and raised in Garden Grove. Since the age of 14, she has contributed hundreds of hours towards “Ending Substance Abuse” and has volunteered with various nonprofit organizations to share her message. As someone who was affected by another person’s substance abuse, Jazmin has shared her story and the importance of motivation, education, and prevention with thousands of people of all ages in the state of California and internationally. She has collaborated with organizations such as Gangs out of Downey, the 10-20 Club, the LA Mission, Youth for Human Rights, Insight Treatment Centers, and other youth groups. Her goal is to motivate, educate, and prevent others from substance abuse by sharing her personal story and inspire others to make responsible decisions that will benefit their futures.

During the COVID pandemic, Jazmin collaborated with international organizations to expand Ending Substance Abuse, virtually. She hosted and participated in various events with Drug Free World Americas, including the President’s Service Awards that were originally intended to be presented at the UN. In May 2021, she recorded an international broadcast with Youth for Human Rights and spoke on the right to education and the impact of the Miss America Organization on her life. During the lockdown, Jazmin also hosted Zoom meetings and appearances for college students to share her journey as a first-generation college student and to motivate other students to pursue their educational goals.

Jazmin was honored to win the Preliminary Talent Award this year at the Miss California competition with her vocal performance of “Astonishing” from Little Women. Throughout her years of service in the organization, she has performed the National Anthem for multiple city council members, fundraisers, and community events including the Anaheim Mayors Breakfast, National Night out in Downey, and the Assisteens Day with Mayor Claudia Frometa. She has appeared in the BiGG Campaign, collaborated with Dr. Dre’s mother as guest speakers for student groups, and is passionate about fitness. She enjoys bodybuilding, hiking, kickboxing, and performing in her spare time.

Currently, Jazmin works for the Garden Grove Unified School District as a bilingual substitute teacher and is a cast member in the entertainment department at Disneyland. As Miss California, Jazmin is preparing to compete for the title of Miss America and will represent the Golden State in the 100th Anniversary of the organization in Connecticut later this year. She is excited to travel the state and make various appearances during her year of service!
