ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION WORKSHOP

Society has changed: The implementation of recent legislation and the global pandemic has caused many new challenges to our communities.

Employees have changed: The newest generation of employees often varies from the more experienced staff in several ways. It is unlikely they will work to retirement age, and they are more apt to transfer departments throughout their careers. The youngest generation generally cares more about work life balance than overtime pay. They want to know the “Why” behind policies and decisions and are motivated by validation. They began their career in an era of covid and when many in the profession have staggering mental health challenges.

Leaders must transform: Copying the communication styles of those that came before us will no longer be effective. Through this workshop, attendees will learn these principles:

  1. The purpose hasn’t changed: Employees care deeply about the work and mission of serving the community. Attendees will tap into this common belief in the work and how to consistently connect everyone in the department to that purpose.
  2. Beyond “Because I told you so”: Sometimes, leaders will say to their troops, “Because the boss said so,” when implementing new policies. This practice is extremely toxic for the organization and builds distrust. Attendees will learn to address their team’s desire to understand the reasoning behind their work and take personal ownership in the new policies.
  3. Protecting mental and physical wellness: Investing in employees mental health, wellness, and long-term career will show them that they are valued.
  4. Pay with praise: People don’t leave careers because of pay or benefits. Studies show that organizations retain people when they feel valued and accepted. Attendees will engage in exercises to reinforce validation.
  5. Communication through conflict: Nothing causes stress to employees more than fighting amongst their leaders. When “camps” or “silos” are formed, the work environment becomes toxic. Attendees will learn concrete skills to resolve conflict.
  6. Judgement kills curiosity: Course attendees will participate in an exercise to be curious about their employees, which will make them less judgmental and more empathetic communicators.
  7. Toxic team members: One toxic team member can negatively impact the entire team’s success. Attendees will learn the skills to remove the impact of the toxic personality.

Attendees will improve their ability to hold themselves and their employees accountable and learn how to use communication methods that prevents division. The key to transforming perceptions, decreasing division, and increasing morale is through strengthening the communication skills of everyone in the department.
